Joan Gardy Artigas (born 18 June 1938) is a renowned Spanish ceramist, sculptor, and graphic artist. He is a significant figure in the Postwar & Contemporary art world, recognized both for his individual work and his extensive collaborations with major 20th-century artists like Joan Miró, Georges Braque, and Marc Chagall. Born in Boulogne-Billancourt, France, Artigas is the son of Josep Llorens Artigas, a celebrated ceramist who was a close friend and collaborator of Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró. Growing up in this artistic environment, he was immersed in the modernist movement from a young age. He began his artistic training at the École du Louvre and then the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he met sculptor Alberto Giacometti. Career and Collaborations
Artigas established his own studio in Paris, initially concentrating on sculpture at Giacometti's suggestion. He developed a unique style, separate from his father's, but his life and career remained deeply intertwined with other masters. Artigas is perhaps best known for his twenty-year collaboration with Joan Miró, which began when Miró called on him to assist after his father's health declined. Their joint works include monumental ceramic walls displayed globally, such as at the UNESCO building in Paris, the Barcelona Airport, the Kunsthaus Zürich, and Harvard University. In his individual career, Artigas created monumental sculptures installed in various countries, including France, Spain, the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom While primarily a ceramist and sculptor, Artigas is also an accomplished lithographer, engraver, and painter, with his work exploring themes of humor, eroticism, and the human form.
Artigas is known for his honesty, search for freedom, and a solid, constant career that spans decades. His work pushes the boundaries of sculpture and ceramics, reflecting a life lived fully within the vibrant 20th-century art scene. His art has been featured in major galleries and museums, including the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo, and is represented in the Fundació Artigas in Barcelona. He continues to be an active artist and is considered a living embodiment of the modernist art movement.
